Zako - Why do parrots speak?
The African gray parrot "Zako" lives in Africa. The parrot mimics human
speech better than any other parrot. Therefore it is often hold in
captivity. In their natural environment (Tropical west Africa, Guinea
east through Uganda, south to southern-central Democratic Republic of
Congo (Zaire), lowland tropical and subtropical forests and woodlands)
the parrots imitate only loud or sharp screams. The parrots "Zako" use their
hinged-hooked beaks to climb the branches of the trees, crack nuts and
seeds.
Why do parrots in cages begin to "speak"?? Scientists believe the
activity saves the birds from boredom.
